Michael Zarl, Team Lead Area 2 Decarbonisation & Sector Coupling, from K1-MET GmbH gave a presentation entitled “Technological innovations for sustainable steel: hydrogen plasma melting reduction on the rise” at the “TUEV AUSTRIA Wasserstoff-Symposium” in Perchtoldsdorf, Austria, on 18 September 2024.

He shed light on the function and state of the art of hydrogen plasma melting reduction. Michael Zarl explained how this innovative method replaces CO?-intensive processes with the use of hydrogen and renewable energy, thereby significantly reducing emissions. In addition, similar initiatives and processes were presented, which can and should also make an important contribution to decarbonising the steel industry. The presentation also provided insights into the current developments, challenges and prospects of hydrogen plasma melting reduction in the context of what is probably the biggest technological upheaval in the steel industry in modern times.
