The 14th Scientific Exchange Day (SED) of K1-MET GmbH took place at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) on Thursday, 24 April 2024.
On the evening before on 23 April, the event kicked off with the keynote speech by Prof. Ruediger Deike (University Duisburg – Essen, Member of the Scientific Advisory Board) on the topic of “How has the steel industry developed over the last 50 years, and can we learn anything from it in the future?”. The keynote was followed by a get-together. The motivation for such a Scientific Exchange Day is to create a unique platform that enables the exchange of knowledge, ideas and innovations between K1-MET and the network of participating industrial companies, universities and research institutions.
On 24 April, around 150 participants came together in Vienna to take part in this event to network, which was held at TU Wien. This event has developed into a central event at which current research activities and results are presented.
The opening words were followed by a panel discussion on the “Future project landscape of K1-MET” and an interactive discussion entitled “Ideas for future COMET funding period”, led by MMag. Elisabeth Eidenberger. Johannes Rieger, Irmela Kofler and Christine Gruber spoke on behalf of their respective areas in the interactive discussion.
Afterwards, the success stories of the three research areas were introduced, each represented by an outstanding success story. Breakthrough research topics were presented by the following K1-MET employees:
- DI Daniel Kavic, MSc (K1-MET GmbH): “Potential of a hybrid through-process approach for adaptive quality control in ladle treatment of steel” (Contribution of Area 1)
- DI Christa Mühlegger, BSc (K1-MET GmbH): “Assessing decarbonization pathways for the steel industry using process simulation” (Contribution of Area 2)
- Mohammad Karimi Zand, MSc (K1-MET GmbH): “Unravling bubble lift force emergence using general vorticity transport equation” (Contribution of Area 3)
Contributions such as those mentioned above show the depth and breadth of the topics covered. The Scientific Exchange Day of the K1-MET programme is therefore not only an information platform but is also developing into a motor for innovation and synergies. The lively atmosphere and the high quality presentations make the SED an indispensable part of the research community and significantly contribute to promote excellence in metallurgical research.
