HILT CRC (Heavy Industry Low-carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre) is an Australian collaborative research centre that brings together industry, research organisations and government to accelerate the decarbonisation of heavy industry. Its research focuses on developing and demonstrating low-carbon technologies for the iron and steel, alumina, cement and lime sectors.
K1-MET brings expertise in hydrogen-based steelmaking, hydrogen plasma smelting reduction, carbon capture and utilisation, circularity, renewable energy integration, and digital process modelling and optimisation. Our research infrastructure includes pilot-scale demonstration facilities and high-temperature laboratories for investigating slag behaviour, material dissolution, and metallurgical reactions.
As part of HILT CRC, we look forward to fostering knowledge exchange between Austrian, European, and Australian heavy-industry research programmes. Together, we aim to advance low-carbon technologies for the iron and steel industry, including electric smelting, hydrogen utilisation, thermal energy systems, and other sustainable production pathways.
