K1-MET at the METEC & 4th ESTAD 2019

June 24-28, 2019
Düsseldorf (Germany)

From June 24-28, 2019, the 10th METEC took place in Düsseldorf, which is the worldwide largest metallurgical trade fair.
Within this fair, the 4th European Steel Technology and Application Days (ESTAD) was held.

K1-MET participated in the ESTAD with a contribution. Miss Katharina Rechberger, M. Sc. (Senior Expert), presented a contribution entitled "Green hydrogen for steelmaking". Miss Rechberger presented the results of a study, which focused on possible CO2 reduction potentials in iron and steelmaking. Model-based calculations for the transformation towards a low carbon iron and steel industry were performed in this research. Therefore, process design models for the natural gas as well as a possible design for the hydrogen based DR-process were developed and evaluated. Beside the CO2 reduction potential, the additional energy demand required for the direct reduction with hydrogen was quantified. Hence, the availability of sufficient amounts of renewable energy to produce green hydrogen plays a dominant role for the decarbonization of the steel industry.

Beside this, Dr. Axel Sormann, (Senior Expert), was chairman of the session "Blast furnace ironmaking: Injection of auxiliary reductants (coal, oil, gas, plastics) and oxygen 1".
