From June 24-28, 2019, the 10^th METEC took place in Düsseldorf, which is the worldwide largest metallurgical trade fair.
Within this fair, the 4^th European Steel Technology and Application Days (ESTAD) was held.

K1-MET participated in the ESTAD with a contribution. Miss Katharina Rechberger, M. Sc. (Senior Expert), presented a contribution entitled "Green hydrogen for steelmaking". Miss Rechberger presented the results of a study, which focused on possible CO₂ reduction potentials in iron and steelmaking. Model-based calculations for the transformation towards a low carbon iron and steel industry were performed in this research. Therefore, process design models for the natural gas as well as a possible design for the hydrogen based DR-process were developed and evaluated. Beside the CO₂ reduction potential, the additional energy demand required for the direct reduction with hydrogen was quantified. Hence, the availability of sufficient amounts of renewable energy to produce green hydrogen plays a dominant role for the decarbonization of the steel industry.

Beside this, Dr. Axel Sormann, (Senior Expert), was chairman of the session "Blast furnace ironmaking: Injection of auxiliary reductants (coal, oil, gas, plastics) and oxygen 1".
