Jeronimo Guarco holding his presentation

Jeronimo Guarco, Postdoc in Area 4, was represented by K1-MET at the ECerS 2023 and gave a presentation entitled

“A method for calculation of erosion parameters in refractory erosion by melts”.

Here is a short summary of his presentation:

Research into refractory wear could lead to significant cost savings and improved efficiency in the steel industry. However, current studies on refractory erosion face obstacles including the lack of an established erosion law and methods for its quantifications given the complexity of the erosion process. To overcome these limitations, we introduce an innovative technique combining CFD simulations with typical finger-test experiments. An inverse calculation routine is presented that allows identification of erosion parameters from comparison between simulation results and erosion profiles obtained from surface scanning of the worn samples during the experiment. The method has been studied on a mathematical basis and has been successfully applied to study the erosion of coarse grain alumina samples at high temperature.
