K1-MET at the Biochar Summit 2026

  • Vienna, Austria
  • 10 – 11 June 2026

Lina Kieush, Thomas Nanz, and Johannes Rieger represented K1-MET GmbH at the Biochar Summit 2026 held in Vienna from 10 to 11 June 2026.

The goal the summit under this year’s motto “From Innovation to Integration: Scaling Biochar to Climate Relevance” is to announce discussions on ensuring safe and efficient biochar logistics, strategies for project development and financing and to get insights from industry leaders who are embedding biochar into sustainable value chains and driving real-world climate solutions.

Lina Kieush gave a presentation entitled “Microstructural evolution and CO2 reactivity of biochar and biocoke for high-temperature metallurgical applications” as part of Session 1.3 “Defossilising Europe’s Metallurgical Sector”. The talk was about a coupled analysis of microstructural properties and kinetics (reactivity under CO2 atmosphere), in which biochar (made from wood chips pyrolysis), biocoke (mixture of biochar and coal) and anthracite were compared.

Thomas Nanz presented a poster entitled “Evaluating the conversion behavior of pyrolysed biomass for injection in the raceway zone”, in which the ARA reactor (ARA = Alternative Reducing Agents) was shown being part of our COMET Competence Center Program (Project 1.1).

Finally, Johannes Rieger gave a presentation entitled “Biochar’s application in steel production supporting Austrians transformation of the steel sector” within the Session 2.1 “Austrian in Action: Biochar Delivering Impact”.

With its activities regarding the use of non-fossil carbon for current and future iron and steelmaking routes, K1-MET GmbH is strongly committed to decarbonize and defossilize the metal producing industries to push forward sustainability, climate neutrality and competitiveness of the metallurgical industry.

Many thanks to the team of Biochar Europe for making this Biochar Summit possible with many fruitful and interesting discussions and networking activities within the two days.
