Phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge ash is technically challenging due to contamination with heavy metals. The PHOS4PLANT project therefore investigates alternative, environmentally friendly processes for phosphorus leaching and precipitation, aiming to produce high-quality fertilizers based on biological processes. One innovative approach is the use of bioelectrochemical systems to precipitate struvite. In addition, the project evaluates the environmental impacts and economic viability of the developed phosphorus recovery technologies through life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis.
Read about the project’s progress in producing ash from sewage sludge in the fourth newsletter 2026.
The project PHOS4PLANT (ATCZ00043) is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Interreg Austria – Czech Republic 2021 – 2027 programme.
