11th Scientific Exchange Day 2022

The 11th Scientific Exchange Day of the K1-MET program was held on 04/20/2022 at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. The Scientific Exchange Day (SED) is an annual held conference, which brings together researcher and industrial partners of the K1-MET program for discussion and networking. With an overall number of nearly 115 participants this year, the event was well attended again.

The first session was dedicated to the success stories of our four Research Areas (one contribution per Area) summarizing latest research highlights. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ruediger Deike (University Duisburg-Essen, Germany), member of K1-MET’s Scientific Advisory Board, was the session chair containing the following presentations:

  • David Algermissen (FEhS Institut für Baustoffforschung): Modification of BOF slag to a GBFS like material and settling behavior of granules in fayalitic slags (contribution Area 1)
  • Valentin Wiesinger (K1-MET / University Applied Sciences - Upper Austria): Influence of the slag on the remelting behavior, energy consumption and non-metallic inclusions during Electro Slag Remelting (contribution Area 2)
  • Thomas Wolfinger (K1-MET): “HYFOR®” - Hydrogen-based fine ore reduction (contribution Area 3)
  • Markus Bösenhofer (K1-MET / TU Wien): Coal reactivity under blast furnace conditions - Experiments and CFD (contribution Area 4)

The second session of the 11th SED was dedicated to projects (developments) started in former funding periods of the K1-MET program, which reached semi-industrial or industrial-scale. Dr. Ing. Valentina Colla (Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa, Italy), member of K1-MET‘s Scientific Advisory Board, was the session chair containing the following presentations:

  • Wolfgang Reiter (K1-MET): Development of a scalable burner and dust feeding system within the RecoDust-process
  • Andreas Spanlang (voestalpine Stahl): Development of an integrated plant simulation model of the MIDREX® process
  • Damir Kahrimanovic (K1-MET): Recurrence CFD - One step closer to simulation-based process monitoring

Schedule: The 12th Scientific Exchange Day shall take place in April 2023 at the Graz University of Technology.
