K1-MET at the 5th ESTAD 2021

The conference ESTAD, co-hosted by VDEh, ASMET, AIM and Jernkontoret, was organised by Jernkontoret in Stockholm this year and took place from August 30th until September 2nd 2021.

The organisers decided to digitally execute the conference to assure the knowledge exchange between the about 600 participants without any safety and health concerns. Under consideration of the country-specific regulations, the on-site participation was possible too.

The provided virtual platform allowed the switching between the six parallel sessions and presentations as at the live conference with the opportunity to pose questions in the Q&A form. The focus was on the decarbonisation of the steel industry. Within this topic, challenges regarding the energy supply, required investments in the grid and water electrolysis cells, storage capabilities and capacities for the generated hydrogen as well as the CO2 free production of steel were pointed out. Further on, the legal and economic framework was discussed.

Besides, the research results related to the production of clean steel, the continuous casting, rolling and forging as well as additive manufacturing of powders, diverse rapid analysis methods, simulation and modelling as well as industry 4.0 with artificial intelligence were shown in the approx. 70 sessions.

Dr. Stefanie Lesiak presented the findings of the dissolution investigations with different lime materials in EAF and BOF slags. The experiments were carried out in cooperation with Lhoist within a non-COMET-project.
